The 4 Psychological Functions of the Fully Functioning Person

Maybe he just reads too much! My younger brother Nicholas, that is.

Once again he was reading one of dad’s books and now he can’t stop talking about what it takes for any of us to become a fully functioning person.

Nicholas suggests that this then brings us to an obvious question, which is “What psychological functions would we need to recognize, accept, develop, be in balance?” He suggests that there are four psychological functions that each of us uses in order to survive. I will do my best to explain what he says.

The Boy with the Three Brains

I love stories.

Every culture, every civilization needs a shared story that most of its members believe in -- really believe in.

We call this our socially constructed view of reality or more commonly “reality.” We know it’s working when most individuals in the culture share a similar narrative in their basic understanding of how things are, how they got that way, and what we should do next.

But what happens when someone wanders too far from the personal narrative and/or the collective story? It seems to be all about balance, and this is precisely where our story begins.

Once upon a time...

#1 Rule of Healthy Relationships

Nicholas, my younger brother, and I had a fight yesterday. It was more like a disagreement. Actually, it was a whole day full of miscommunication. It was as if we each spoke a different language all day long.

It was like we each were talking while having a mouthful of chocolate chip cookies, and also having bags over our heads. So neither our ears nor our mouths were functioning well.

It was really odd as we usually communicate well.

Attention Deficit Disorder/Intention Deficit Disorder, Half Promise/Half Prayer

He is at it again! My younger brother Nicholas, that is.

He obviously has ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder).

He can hardly sit still and his mind is constantly racing, so much input for one child’s brain. Anyways, he has been reading up on ADD in order to find out what the experts say about it.

As always, his version of what’s going on seems to be different than what most people say.
