Every day is Earth Day in the world of Ecopsychology.
As we acknowledge April 22nd as Earth Day, let us acknowledge that without our connection to the earth, and the entire universe, we are dis-connecting from our very nature.
Let us acknowledge climate change and the fact that some people do not acknowledge our human, and unfortunate at times, impact on this planet and beyond.
Although some of us love living in cities and all they provide, we also love our community gardens, running in parks and along river beds, reading in public gardens, growing and caring for house plants, working to keep the environment healthy.
If you care about the environment and your place within its amazing web, then you are an ecopsycholgist at heart. What does that mean?
As an Ecopsychologist it means you recognizes and seek to understand the ways (no matter if you live off the grid or in the middle of a busy city) you can live in harmony and synchronicity with the natural world.
As an Ecopsychologist I am interested in examining the human psyche in relationship to the earth and environment as well as to self, family, and beyond. I am interested in promoting Mindfulness through connection to nature.
How can you do this?
1) Every day, as you walk outside or look through your windows, notice and appreciate what the earth and beyond has given you:
- I appreciate the plants that provide oxygen.
- I appreciate flowers and plants that provide joy and beauty.
- I appreciate the ground the supports the apartment building I live in.
- I appreciate the house plants that I time to keep healthy.
- I appreciate the community garden in my neighborhood.
- I appreciate the ocean and my ability to play in/with it.
- I appreciate my vegetable garden which gives me and my family nourishment.
- I appreciate the farmer’s market that allows me to have fresh, local foods.
- I appreciate the people who devote their lives to a healthier environment.
2) Before you go to sleep at night, appreciate the breath which connects you with the universe. Without the oxygen provide by the universe you would not be here. Appreciate at least 9 breaths.
3) If you feel it is best and right for you:
- find a local environmental organization and volunteer your time.
- shop locally.
- use electronics mindfully (turn of lights and computers when not in use).
- shop farmer’s markets.
- learn about global issues.
- play joyfully in the ocean and rivers.
