While riding the train, I overheard this question being asked by a young woman of her teary-eyed friend.
Such a simple, yet profound, question. What DO you long for? Inner peace? Compassion? Forgiveness? Security? Love? What internal state of mind do you long for? On a piece of paper or in your journal, write down what comes to mind.
- What is the feeling state you long for?
- How do you feel when you think of this longed for way of being?
- When do you feel it? If you can feel it, even for a moment, then you can feel it more often?
- How can you keep your Attention on that longed-for feeling?
Longings are your life dreams and goals. They typically don’t just happen on their own. Using the Window of Opportunity as a guide will help you bring those longings (Intentions) to the surface, and motivate you to take action (keep you Attention focused). If you haven’t already done so, please download your free guide from the homepage. Intention and Attention are the two key ingredients to creating the life you long for. If you truly want your heart’s longing to be realized:
- Be very clear about your Intentions (longings) — compassion, love, abundance — these are just the words. What is the feeling state you long for?
- Be ready to take action to keep you Attention on this feeling. You cannot create change by continuing with old habits.
- If you want to become a yoga instructor, then you have to practice yoga on a regular basis and take classes to build your skills. That is how you build the feeling state associated with this longing.
- If you want to have a healthier physical body, you must pay attention to what you put into it and what exercise you do, not just one meal or for one day, but on a regular, consistent basis. That is how you build the feeling state associated with this longing.
- If you want the peace of mind and security of having enough money, then you must examine your financial situation and change your focus and habits associated with abundance. Not by cutting back once in a while. Not by creating a vision board of abundance and then not taking any other actions, but by constantly and consistently bringing your Attention and actions to the feeling you long for.
Remember: Nothing changes, if nothing changes.
Read the following and ask yourself “What new street (habit) do you want to walk down?”
The Holes in the Sidewalk
Written Version
Autobiography in Five Short Chapters
by Portia Nelson
Chapter I
I walk, down the street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I fall in… I am helpless.
It isn’t my fault.
It takes forever to find a way out.
Chapter II
I walk, down the street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I pretend that I don’t see it.
I fall in again.
I can’t believe I am in the same place,
but it isn’t my fault.
It still takes a long time to get out.
Chapter III
I walk, down the street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I see it is there.
I still fall in… It’s a habit.
My eyes are open. I know where I am.
It is my fault.
I get out immediately.
Chapter IV
I walk down the street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I walk around it.
Chapter V
I walk down another street.
Again, “What new street (habit) do you get (want) to walk down?” Go there.
