Wealth, Abundance, Manifesting, Manifestation

If you have a body, you’ll want enough money to keep it healthy.

If you have feelings, you’ll want enough money to feel at peace and happy.

If you have thoughts, are they very often about money (some good thoughts about money, some stressful about money)?

If you have a spiritual self, it is best served when the physical (body), emotional (feelings) and thinking selves are content.  Although money may not buy happiness, it can often support it.

What are some common money misconceptions or myths that might keep you from having enough money?

Myth #1: Money can’t buy happiness or contentment.

I agree, happiness and contentment are not for sale.  However, being poor or always stressed out about money doesn’t bring happiness or contentment either.  You deserve to have enough money so that your happiness is not being held hostage.  It’s not the amount of money that will make you happy, but the feeling associated with not stressing about money (or health, or relationships, or work) that brings the feeling of happiness. Only you can decide what is enough — some people wish to live with less, that brings true contentment; others feel they want more.  When the balance between having too little or too much creates stress, it’s time to reassess why money matters to you, what is enough?

Myth #2: People with money think more about themselves than others.

Isn’t it true that only when you are comfortable (whatever that means to you) and able to take care of yourself and your family that you can truly help others?  How does not having enough money, food, or love allow you to give more of that to others in need? It is selfish to deny yourself the contentment of being able to take care of yourself, then you are able to give to others (if you choose).

Myth #3: Having too much money gets in the way of being spiritual.

I once heard the Dalai Llama say, “There is nothing spiritual in being poor.”  We tend to romanticize third world countries, thinking that although many people struggle for the most basic needs, they have their peace of mind through spiritual practice.  I’ve traveled to many underdeveloped parts of the world, and just like you and me, people everywhere are in pain if they do not have food, shelter, money, or love.  Sometimes a spiritual practice is able to blossom in the absence of need, in the presence of peace of mind.

Myth #4: I don’t know how to make enough money to feel comfortable.

Sometimes we don’t want to take the risks, or acknowledge we lack the motivation, it may take to have enough.  Maybe it means risking a relationship in order to take a second job, or it means not spending so much in order to save enough to start your own business.  It may mean taking a real look or inventory of your assets and debits in order to make the changes you would need to make in order to be financially more stable.  Maybe it’s cutting up your credit cards, or saying ‘no’ to family and friends who ask to borrow money.  What about taking the risk of going back to school for a new career.  Maybe it’s believing you deserve to be financially comfortable.  You know what it would take.  You can decide whether or not it’s worth it.

Myth #5: I am embarrassed to admit that I’d like to have more money.

I am embarrassed to admit that I’d like to have more money. Misery loves company; so does joy, financial stability, and comfort.  Sometimes admitting that you’d like more money, a better home, the ability to go on more vacations, or move away to a more prosperous location can challenge the life, and relationships, you now have.  What would people in your life think if you said you wanted to be independently wealthy and were going to work towards that?  How would it feel to work towards being financial stable, not worrying about money?  You can, and deserve to, feel that if that is what you bring you closer to your life dreams and goals.
